Chapter 97
The worker hadn’t seen Eve before and was taken aback by her sudden, loud shout. After a moment of hesitation, she gave Eve an awkward smile and quickly turned to walk away.
Eve, increasingly anxious, immediately tried calling Myra, but her calls went unanswered. It really seems like they might be getting a divorce… Eve’s face went pale with concern. She hurried toward the pantry, pulling out her phone to make an international call. She dialed her son, Sean, desperately needing answers.
“What’s going on, Sean? Didn’t I tell you to convince Myra to come back? What have you done to her? She’s even resigning from the Chase Group now!” Eve’s voice was filled with worry and frustration.
On the other end, Sean’s tone remained surprisingly calm. “Myra and I have decided to get a divorce, Mom.”
“What?! Are you crazy?” Eve was stunned. “A divorce? Are you mad, Sean? How could you do that to Myra?! You need to get back here now!” Her voice was shaky as she tried to process the information.
“I’m in New York, Mom, and I can’t leave right now,” Sean replied, his voice flat. “I’ve been thinking about this for a while. I know you like Myra, but I don’t feel the same way anymore. I hope you can understand my decision.” With that, he ended the call abruptly.
Eve stood frozen, holding the phone in her hand as the call disconnected with a beep. Why did I leave? She thought in panic. I should have stayed and not given them space to ruin their relationship. If I hadn’t listened to Leo… She clenched her teeth, blaming Leo for his interference. He’s just an outsider!
“They can’t get a divorce! They simply can’t!” Eve muttered fiercely to herself as she stormed toward the elevator. As soon as the elevator doors opened, she stepped inside, determined to do something to prevent it. She made her way downstairs, her mind racing.
Lyla, too, was heading down. She’d just emerged from a small room, looking pale and troubled. She had been thinking about Eve and the possibility of her intervening in Sean and Myra’s relationship. What if Eve stops them from getting a divorce? Lyla frowned as she walked down the stairs, not bothering with the elevator.
Once she reached the first floor, she heard loud voices coming from the front desk. Her frown deepened as she approached the source of the commotion. A pretty but obviously agitated woman was arguing with the front desk worker. “Let go of me! I want to see my cousin! Sean’s my cousin—he’s your Director Chase! If you keep stopping me, I’ll get him to fire you!”
Lyla raised an eyebrow, recognizing the woman immediately. It was Sasha, Sean’s cousin. The two of them had never gotten along. Sasha had always looked down on Lyla, and now, here she was, causing a scene.
With a sly smirk, Lyla walked over and instructed the front desk worker to let Sasha go. “It’s been a while, Sasha,” she said with a smooth, almost mocking smile.
Sasha’s face darkened when she saw who it was. She knew about Lyla’s return and her involvement with Sean, and though she disliked Lyla, she hated Myra even more. Ever since the plagiarism scandal and discovering Tony’s feelings for Myra, Sasha had been eager to bring Myra down.
Sasha remembered how she’d whispered about Myra’s supposed flirtation with Tony Hart to a few key people, hoping it would damage Myra’s reputation. It worked—partnerships with the Hay Group were canceled, and their stock prices plummeted. But now, in the face of Hay Group’s impending collapse, Sasha had no choice but to ask her cousin Sean for help.
She straightened up, no longer caring about her animosity with Lyla. “Miss Fisher, please tell Sean I need his help. He’s the only one who can save the Hay Group now. It’s a disaster. He can’t just watch us fall apart!”
Lyla tilted her head, eyes gleaming with satisfaction at Sasha’s desperate state. “Looks like Sean’s already made up his mind, Sasha. If he doesn’t want to help you, I doubt anything I say will change his mind.”
Sasha gritted her teeth. She understood the implication behind Lyla’s words but knew the situation at the Hay Group was critical. Her fists clenched in frustration as she spoke.
“I know you’re back to win Sean over for yourself, Lyla,” Sasha hissed. “But right now, Myra still holds her status and title. She’s done a lot for the Chase Group—half of the company might even end up with her. But I doubt that’s what you want, right?”
Lyla raised an eyebrow, unimpressed. “What are you getting at?”
Sasha took a deep breath, choosing her words carefully. “I’ve got information on Myra that might help you, but you need to promise me you’ll speak in favor of the Hay Group to Sean.”
Lyla’s lips curled into a sly smile. “I’ll listen, but it all depends on what you have to say.”
Sasha hesitated, knowing this was a dangerous move. But she hated Myra so much that she was willing to do anything. “Myra has been trying to seduce Tony Hart, the director of Hart Group.”
Lyla’s eyes flickered with interest. So, Myra’s been after Tony, has she? She thought, savoring the knowledge.
The next day, Myra was on her way to work when she received a call from Estelle. “Hey, Myra—what’s going on between you and Director Hart?” Estelle’s voice was buzzing with excitement. “Shawn said Tony might be interested in you, but you rejected him, didn’t you?”
Myra felt a lump in her throat as she recalled her conversation with Tony the night before. She pushed the feelings aside and tried to remain unaffected. “I’ll talk to you later. I’m almost at the company,” she said, trying to end the call quickly.
Estelle wasn’t ready to give up, though. “Wait! Don’t hang up! You can’t pass up an opportunity like this, Myra! Tony is amazing! You need to hold on to him. But, of course, the divorce is important too—you need to speed that up so you can officially be with him!”
Beep… beep… beep. Myra had already hung up, not wanting to listen to Estelle’s incessant chatter. Estelle stared at her phone, frustrated. “That heartless woman! I’m just trying to help her! Tony’s the perfect guy for her, but she’s so stubborn!”
At that moment, Shawn walked into the room, leaning casually against the doorframe, half-dressed. “Tony wouldn’t be interested in her if she weren’t the stubborn woman she is,” he remarked with a knowing smile.
