Chapter 54
Eve’s guilt deepened when she saw the hurt in Myra’s voice. Myra, not one to scheme or manipulate, had been framed and wronged. The thought of it made Eve seethe with anger. “I never thought Miss Torres from the Hay Group could do something so despicable,” Eve muttered, her voice trembling with emotion. “And as for Miss Foster, I’ve already called Sean. I told him he needs to take strict action against her. It wouldn’t be fair to you otherwise.”
She paused, then placed a comforting hand on Myra’s. “And Richard—Sean’s secretary—told me that Sean’s been gathering evidence to clear your name. He might not show it, but he really does care about you.”
When Richard had mentioned this, Eve had felt a weight lift from her shoulders. Perhaps this was a chance for Myra and Sean to fix the broken pieces of their relationship.
Myra’s hand stiffened at the mention of Sean. She remembered what Mr. Xavier had told her yesterday, and Tilly had also hinted that Sean was actively working to clear her name. Could it be that, despite everything, Sean had believed in her all along, even if he didn’t admit it?
Eve, aware of Myra’s lingering feelings for her son, noted the hesitation in Myra’s eyes. Over the past two years, Myra had stood by Sean, despite the pain he caused her. Eve’s heart went out to Myra, but she also worried. Myra’s love for Sean had cost her so much, yet it seemed that her feelings for him had not wavered.
Seeing Myra so conflicted, Eve gently patted her hand, trying to comfort her. “You know how Sean is,” she said softly. “Talk to him when he gets home from work. I heard you’re going to Old Master Hart’s birthday banquet together tomorrow. According to the staff at the atelier, Sean has had a dress specially made for you in Paris. It’s a limited edition, and it’s being flown over as we speak. Sean really is trying to change, Myra. I know he’s made mistakes, but I hope you won’t hold them against him. Please, look at the bigger picture. Try to build a happy future with him.”
That night, Myra tossed and turned in bed, her mind racing. The pain she had endured over the past two years still lingered, and though she had once asked Sean for a divorce, deep down, she knew she couldn’t leave without a fight. She had given him her best years, sacrificed so much for him. Could she walk away from it all?
But trust? Could she trust him again after all the times she had been hurt? Every time she had opened her heart, she had ended up more wounded than before. Could she risk that again? Her thoughts spiraled in uncertainty.
Suddenly, the bedroom door swung open with a loud bang. Myra’s heart skipped a beat, and she bolted upright in bed. The man she had been thinking about—Sean—stumbled into the room, drunk. His steps were unsteady as he slammed the door shut behind him, his eyes cold and angry.
Worried that he might trip over something in the dark, Myra quickly turned on the bedside lamp. Under the dim lighting, his face looked hard, almost frozen, his eyes like cold steel as they locked onto hers. He staggered forward, coming closer before she could react. Without warning, his hand shot out and gripped her chin tightly.
Pain shot through her, and her old injury flared up, causing tears to well in her eyes. “Let go of me, Sean!” she cried out, pushing at his arm. But he only tightened his hold on her, his breath heavy with the stench of alcohol.
“You have some nerve, Myra Stark!” he hissed, his voice cold and venomous.
The pain was unbearable, but she struggled to free herself. “What the hell are you doing, Sean?”
His laughter was bitter and cruel. “What do you think I’m doing?” His gaze raked over her, venom dripping from every word. “I’m going to kill you, Myra!”
Myra froze, her blood running cold at his words. Her mind spun as he continued to rage.
“You can’t stand being alone, can you? You went into Director Hart’s room just to have an edge in the Sunny Bay Project, didn’t you? I know exactly what goes on behind closed doors between two grown-ups.” His voice was mocking, full of disdain. “I’m only telling you this so you won’t think you can walk all over me.”
Myra’s chest tightened, the accusations hitting her like a physical blow. She had never expected this kind of outburst from him. “Do you believe me now, Sean?” she whispered, her voice shaking. “The Hay Group has already cleared my name. I secured the project for our company. What more do you want from me?”
Sean’s expression twisted into something darker as he loomed over her. He reached for her nightdress, his hands tearing at the fabric, and Myra’s heart pounded in fear. She tried to scream, but his grip on her intensified.
“Isn’t this what you wanted all along?” he growled. “You wanted me to see you like this, didn’t you?”
His eyes burned with an intensity that made her blood run cold. She couldn’t breathe, her chest tightening as his words cut through her.
“Let me go, Sean!” she cried, her voice hoarse with desperation. “Please, don’t do this to me!”
But it was no use. Her attempts to break free were futile. As he pressed down on her, she closed her eyes, tears streaming down her face, her heart shattering as she realized how far they had fallen.
His phone buzzed in his pocket, snapping him out of his fury. With a twisted look, he grabbed his phone and found the video of Myra leaving Tony’s bedroom. Myra’s face went pale as he thrust the phone in front of her, her disheveled figure on the screen.
The phone hit her forehead with a sharp thud, and for a moment, everything went black. She reached up to touch her head, her fingers coming away stained with red.
Her mind whirled as she watched the video play. She saw herself running out of Tony’s room, her clothes in disarray, her face flushed with emotion.
